To see a World

The title of this website and blog comes from a poem by William Blake, which begins:

To see a World in a Grain of Sand
And a Heaven in a Wild Flower,
Hold Infinity in the palm of your hand
And Eternity in an hour.

This is not, however, a poetry blog, but rather a photography blog.  I hope you will find some of what is here interesting or inspiring.  The idea behind my photography – in common with most urban photographers – is to try, through photography, to find the extraordinary in the ordinary, the profound in the mundane, the World in a Grain of Sand.  Although all photographers like to obsess about camera equipment and argue the merits of one camera or lens over another, the truth is, as Dorothea Lange said, that “the camera is an instrument that teaches people how to see without a camera”.

I welcome comments and contributions from any visitors.

Mark Davis was born in Northern Ireland in 1970, and has had a lifelong interest in photography, progressing from an instant camera to a Ricoh SLR in the early 1980s with a 50mm lens.  Today, he lives in London but travels frequently to cities across the world, photographing the lives of ordinary people.  He now uses a Leica M9 with some Leica and Zeiss lenses (21mm, 35mm and 50mm) a Ricoh GR (equivalent 28mm f2.8) and film with a Nikon Fm3A and Contax T2.
